The F-47 fighter jet and XA-103 engine, developed by the U.S. to replace the F-22 Raptor, have appeared for the first time.

The sixth-generation F-47 fighter jet, set to replace the U.S. Air Force’s F-22 Raptor, is in the spotlight along with its XA-103 engine. A video also includes footage claimed to belong to the F-47.

The U.S.’s Sixth-Generation F-47 Fighter Jet and XA-103 Engine Have Emerged

The U.S. Air Force’s new sixth-generation fighter jet, the F-47, which will take the place of the F-22 Raptor, came into the spotlight with a short released video. In the video, the focus is more on the special XA-103 engine that will power the aircraft than on the aircraft itself.

In a short video released by Pratt & Whitney, the engine development process of the F-47 and a fully digital design approach were shown. A few seconds of the video feature footage claimed to be of the F-47. The visuals display a high cockpit, delta wings, tailless design, and aggressive stealth features. However, it has not been confirmed whether these visuals show the real F-47.

The F-47 is being developed in the U.S. under the Air Force’s Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program. It is currently in the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase, and the first prototype is planned to fly in 2028. It is claimed that test platforms have been conducting secret flights since 2020.

The F-47 is being developed by Lockheed Martin and will replace the F-22 Raptor. Once the program is completed, at least 185 F-47 aircraft will be delivered. As a sixth-generation fighter, the F-47 will lead autonomous Loyal Wingman unmanned aircraft and provide high stealth against radar. Its primary mission will be long-range missile strikes.

The XA-103 engine powering the F-47 features three-stream adaptive cycle technology. This technology directs airflow through different paths, increasing fuel efficiency and thrust. An adaptive fan system reduces heat signature by cooling onboard systems. When extra thrust is needed, the third stream can be directed to the core and fan flow. The XA-103 engine will generate 10% more thrust compared to the F-35 and increase the F-47’s range by 25%.

The new engine and aircraft will significantly enhance the U.S.’s air superiority capabilities. The F-47 will be more effective in long-range missions, provide sufficient power to sensors and weapon systems, and act as a hub between systems. Its stealth and long-range mission capability will surpass those of the F-22 and F-35.

The F-47 and XA-103 engine are seen as a significant step in sixth-generation fighter development. However, most details of the platform remain classified, and publicly available information is limited. It remains unclear whether the visuals in the video accurately represent the aircraft.
