The crash occurred around 3:05 p.m. local time on Aolele Street. State officials noted that the building the plane hit had been evacuated for demolition, adding that it was fortunate the incident did not result in a larger disaster.
One of the victims, confirmed by family sources, was Hiram Defries, a Punahou School graduate and training pilot in his 20s. The identity of the other individual has not yet been released.

Witnesses in the area described the plane flying at a low altitude before tilting to its side and crashing. One witness said, “Suddenly, I heard a loud explosion, and when I looked outside, I saw thick smoke. My colleagues told me the plane had crashed close to us.”
Another eyewitness, Nancy Timko, shared, “I saw the plane from my office window; it was flying very low. Then I realized it was trying to return to the airport, but there was a huge explosion.”
Authorities’ Statements
The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) quickly evacuated the area after the crash and confirmed that the building was completely unoccupied. HFD Chief Kalani Hao said, “This is a tragic loss. Our condolences go out to the Kamaka Air family.”
Honolulu EMS Chief Jim Ireland stated that both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. “As EMS, we always carry hope for rescue efforts, but sadly, that wasn’t possible today,” he said.

Shortly before the crash, the pilot of Kamaka Flight 689 reportedly told the control tower, “We’re out of control here.” The tower attempted to direct the pilot to land on any available runway, but the crash could not be averted.
