Moments of Fear in the Air: Engine Caught Fire! Garuda Plane Made an Emergency Landing

The Garuda Indonesia flight GA-1105, operated by a Boeing 747-400, encountered an unexpected incident on Wednesday after taking off for Medina. The flight, carrying 450 passengers and 18 crew members, returned to Makassar airport at 17:15 local time (0915 GMT).

Garuda Indonesia President Director Irfan Setiaputra stated that shortly after takeoff, one of the engines caught fire, prompting the captain to make an emergency landing due to engine issues. Following the aircraft’s return, passengers were directed to accommodations and new flight arrangements were made. Among the passengers were individuals traveling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage.

While social media footage, not verified by AFP, allegedly showed the plane’s engine catching fire during takeoff, authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident.

Irfan mentioned that the aircraft is being held for a safety investigation and the causes of the incident are being examined. Garuda Indonesia has faced challenging times due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with travel restrictions and reduced demand leading to a significant portion of its fleet being grounded and a reduction in staff.
