Gulfstream G150 Skids Off Runway at Chicago Executive Airport: Pilots Unharmed, Aircraft Undamaged

A striking incident occurred at Chicago Executive Airport, located in the northern suburbs of Chicago. A Gulfstream G150 private jet veered off the runway during landing and collided with the airport’s perimeter security fence. Officials confirmed that only the pilot and co-pilot were on board, both escaping the accident unharmed.

EMAS System Prevented Disaster

Wheeling Fire Chief Scott Salela noted that the jet was stopped before leaving the runway thanks to the EMAS (Engineered Materials Arrestor System) at the runway’s end, preventing a potential catastrophe. Salela said, “There were cars passing by at the same time, which could have created a major risk. Fortunately, no one was injured.”

Airport Temporarily Closed

The incident occurred around midday. The jet’s nose came to rest near Hintz Road, and no fuel leaks or fire risks were detected. Emergency crews cleared the area and removed the aircraft using a tow vehicle as part of standard safety procedures.

The airport remained closed during investigation and cleanup operations. Officials reported that the runway reopened at 7:22 PM, and operations returned to normal.

Authorities stated that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are conducting an investigation into the cause of the accident. Early reports indicate the aircraft had arrived from Baltimore and that the pilot reported a mechanical issue during landing.
