Engine Fire on United Airlines Plane at Chicago O’Hare Airport

On May 27, 2024, a United Airlines plane preparing for departure from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) was forced to cancel its takeoff due to an engine fire.

Flight UA 2091 Cancels Takeoff Due to Engine Fire

Flight UA 2091, an A320 (registered N432UA), was set to depart for Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA) when smoke was observed coming from its left engine (International Aero Engines IAE V2527-A5).

A video captured by a passenger on the aircraft showed thick, dark smoke billowing from the plane’s left wing as it moved along the runway.

FAA Report and Emergency Response

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), flames were reported at around 2:00 PM while the aircraft was still on the taxiway. The takeoff was aborted, and the plane was returned to the gate. The FAA temporarily halted arrivals at Chicago O’Hare until normal operations resumed at 2:45 PM.

Passengers and Crew Safe

All 148 passengers and five crew members on board were unharmed, with no injuries reported. United Airlines stated that all passengers were rebooked on alternative flights to Seattle and that the disruption was kept to a minimum. The airline also noted that fire trucks and medical personnel met the aircraft as a precautionary measure.
