Fire in Control Tower! Moments of Fear at the Airport

Firefighting teams responded to a fire at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Thursday morning. The Charlotte Fire Department reported that the fire started around 8:10 AM on Josh Birmingham Parkway, in the old air traffic control tower.

Officials stated that during the fire, four construction workers were briefly trapped but managed to escape without injuries. Photos and videos from the airport showed smoke rising from the tower.

Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control within 10 minutes. As a precaution, a second alarm was triggered to call for additional resources. Since the fire occurred in the old control tower, airport operations were not disrupted.

Inspectors determined that the fire started accidentally in an elevator shaft during demolition work. According to the team’s statement, molten slag from hot work fell down the shaft and ignited a pile of foam insulation, causing the fire.

No injuries were reported in the incident.
