According to ICAO’s new regulation, the use of powerbanks during flights has been banned. Passengers will no longer be able to charge their devices on board, and transportation rules have also been tightened.
Complete Ban on Powerbank Use on Aircraft
A significant regulation has been introduced in international civil aviation. According to the latest update by the International Civil Aviation Organization, passengers are now completely prohibited from using powerbanks during flights.
With the new rule, charging mobile devices on board using portable chargers will no longer be allowed. The regulation aims to enhance aviation safety.
New Rules Under the “Dangerous Goods” Category
It was stated that the decision was implemented within the framework of ICAO’s “Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods.”
Authorities emphasized that preventive measures have been taken, particularly against fire risks caused by lithium batteries. In this context, the use of powerbanks has been banned throughout the flight.
Transportation Rules Also Tightened
The new regulation also covers transportation conditions.
Accordingly:
- The transport of powerbanks in checked baggage is completely prohibited
- Devices may only be carried in cabin baggage or on the passenger
- Each passenger may carry a maximum of 2 powerbanks
- Devices must be kept in an easily accessible location throughout the flight
These rules aim to facilitate rapid response in case of potential risks.
Exemption Granted to Cabin Crew
While the new regulation applies to passengers, flight crews are excluded.
Aircraft crew will retain the authority to carry and use powerbanks in line with operational needs. It was stated that this situation is considered an exception due to flight safety and duty requirements.
Officially Notified to 193 Countries
It was announced that the decisions taken have been officially communicated to 193 ICAO member countries.
Authorities stated that the main purpose of the regulation is “to proactively prevent potential risks arising from passenger powerbanks and to maximize global aviation safety.”
