Bouncing Plane Moments: Landing Attempt at Zurich Airport Goes Viral
An unusual incident at Zurich Airport on May 30, 2024, has captured the attention of aviation enthusiasts. An observer uploaded a video to YouTube showing a go-around attempt by a 32-year-old United Airlines Boeing 767-300ER aircraft during its landing attempt.
The incident occurred on flight UA52 from Washington (IAD) with the aircraft registration code N654UA. The plane was attempting to land on runway 28, Zurich Airport’s shortest runway, which is just over 8,200 feet long. According to the observer who posted the video, the runway was wet despite the absence of crosswinds during the landing.
In the video, the initial landing appears to be standard, but after what looks like a smooth touchdown, the plane bounces and struggles to stay on the ground. The pilots decided to perform a go-around after the failed landing attempt, applying thrust to the engines and pushing the nose down to gain speed. The aircraft circled around and made a safe second landing on the same runway approximately 15 minutes later.
While the event seems to be a standard procedure overall, the observer notes that the angle from which the video was filmed exaggerated the plane’s movements. This makes it challenging to fully grasp how impressive the incident actually was.
The reasons behind this event are still unclear. It remains uncertain whether the pilots initiated lift-off too early, whether the spoilers did not deploy, or if other factors were involved.
