Turkey’s First Supersonic Jet Trainer Aircraft Makes History

HÜRJET, Turkey’s first jet-powered supersonic trainer aircraft, achieved a significant milestone by reaching a speed of 0.9 mach at an altitude of 30,000 feet.

Pride of TUSAŞ: HÜRJET

Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ), under the coordination of the Presidency of Defense Industries, is working intensively to prepare Turkey’s first jet-powered supersonic aircraft, HÜRJET, for its mission. TUSAŞ General Manager Mehmet Demiroğlu announced on his social media account that HÜRJET is progressing at full speed, successfully completing its 79th sortie. Demiroğlu emphasized that the aircraft reached a speed of 0.9 mach at 30,000 feet and will continue to strengthen Turkish aviation.

First Delivery in 2025

The HÜRJET Jet Trainer and Light Attack Aircraft Project, developed with domestic resources, began in August 2017. TUSAŞ aims to produce 6-7 aircraft in the first year of mass production, and from the following year onwards, to produce 2 aircraft per month, totaling 24 aircraft annually. It is planned that, starting in 2025, 2 HÜRJET aircraft will be delivered to customers each month. The Turkish Air Force is expected to start receiving HÜRJET deliveries in 2025. In line with the mass production decision taken by the Defense Industry Executive Committee in January 2022, 16 HÜRJET aircraft will initially be delivered to the Air Force.

The “National Jet” Born from 8,000 Parts

HÜRJET’s development began as the Jet Trainer Aircraft Development Project in August 2017. The conceptual design activities were completed in April 2018, preliminary design activities in July 2019, and critical design activities in February 2021. Following the completion of the design cycles, production activities commenced. The manufacturing of approximately 8,000 parts that make up HÜRJET began in January 2021. The produced parts and equipment were assembled on the final assembly line.

HÜRJET started its engine for the first time on January 30, 2023. The aircraft met the runway for taxi tests on March 18, 2023, and took to the skies for the first time on April 25, 2023.

Capable of Performing Various Missions

Designed to play a critical role in modern fighter pilot training, the single-engine, tandem cockpit HÜRJET boasts superior performance features. It can perform roles such as combat readiness transition training, air patrol (armed and unarmed), and aerobatic demonstration. With a length of approximately 14 meters, a height of 5 meters, and a wingspan of 9.5 meters, HÜRJET can reach a speed of 1.4 mach and fly at a maximum altitude of 45,000 feet. The aircraft can be equipped with 7 stations, three under each wing and one under the fuselage, to carry various payloads. HÜRJET can carry nearly 3 tons of useful load.
