İGA CEO talks to BBC News about the future of Istanbul Airport

Heslehurst first asked, “We are looking at the continuously increasing and extraordinary air travel. In 2024, you expect Istanbul Airport’s passenger numbers to exceed 85 million as a global transfer hub. If you achieve this, you will surpass London’s Heathrow as Europe’s largest airport. How are you achieving this, and are you ready for it?”

Highlighting the expectation of large-scale growth from the project’s inception, Selahattin Bilgen responded, “We are quite prepared for this; we have anticipated large-scale growth from the beginning of our project. We have completed our fourth year as Europe’s busiest airport in terms of air traffic. With the growth in air traffic numbers this year, our passenger numbers will also increase. Istanbul Airport broke the daily passenger record last July. We are well-prepared to become Europe’s number one and expect to be number one globally,” he said.

In response to Heslehurst’s question, “Istanbul Airport stands out as one of the world’s most sustainable airports, can you briefly explain why?”

Bilgen noted that Istanbul Airport, being a very new airport, was designed and constructed with the latest technologies. “From the start, our philosophy has always been to create a sustainable airport. We are currently investing in a solar power plant that will supply electricity for the entire airport ecosystem from renewable sources. Additionally, our airport has its own seaport, allowing us to supply our airport fuel from any seaport in the world,” he explained.
