IATA announced that contactless international travel is possible through digital identity and biometric verification. The new system will open the door to a paperless and faster travel era.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced the results of digital identity-focused Proof of Concept (PoC) studies conducted in Europe and the Asia-Pacific regions. The studies revealed that digital identity can replace paper documents, making contactless and biometric international travel feasible.
Aviation Industry Collaborated
The studies, carried out with the participation of airlines, airports, technology providers, and governments, were conducted under the IATA Strategic Partnerships Program. Tests demonstrated that passenger processes can proceed without the need for paper documents by using digital identities stored in mobile wallets and biometric verification systems.
Digital Identity and Biometrics Simplify the Process
The tests showed that passengers can securely share their identity data before travel, reducing repetitive document checks at airports. Thanks to biometric verification, passengers can pass through checkpoints quickly and without contact.
In addition, the use of a single digital identity throughout the entire journey ensures faster and more efficient processes.
Different Systems Can Work Together
PoC studies also revealed that different digital identity systems can interoperate on a global scale. In addition to digital wallets such as Apple Wallet and Google Wallet, national systems like India’s Digi Yatra program can also be used in an integrated manner.
This enables seamless use of digital identity even on journeys involving multiple airlines and airports.
Willie Walsh: “Governments Must Accelerate the Process”
IATA Director General Willie Walsh stated that digital identity applications have proven to operate securely and efficiently, calling on governments to take action. Walsh emphasized the need to expand the use of Digital Travel Credentials (DTC), which are the digital version of passports.
He highlighted that this transformation will provide stronger security, faster passenger experience, and operational efficiency.
Pilot Projects Successfully Completed
The pilot implementations demonstrated that passengers can travel without presenting physical passports or boarding passes. It was observed that passengers can complete airport processes using their digital identities through biometric verification.
Three Critical Steps for Global Implementation
IATA stated that governments need to take action in three areas for the global implementation of digital identity systems:
- Establishing legal and technical infrastructure for digital travel credentials
- Mutual recognition and verification of digital identities between countries
- Development of globally interoperable systems
Digital Transformation Accelerates in the Sector
The announced results show that digitalization in the aviation sector is accelerating, and digital identity applications are expected to become one of the core elements of international travel processes in the near future.
