Fire Hazard on Total Linhas Aéreas Boeing 737-400, Emergency Landing Successfully Executed

A Boeing 737-400 cargo plane operated by Total Linhas Aéreas narrowly avoided a serious fire hazard during its flight from Vitoria to Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport, Brazil, on flight 0T-5682.

Fire Alarm and Emergency Declaration

While descending towards Guarulhos, the crew was alerted to a fire alarm coming from the main cargo hold and declared an emergency. The crew worked to manage the situation, but communications were lost with the radio about 5 minutes before landing. However, the aircraft’s transponder remained functional, allowing the tower to maintain contact. The pilots successfully landed the aircraft on runway 28L at Guarulhos Airport and brought it to a stop.

Dramatic Evacuation and Fire Response

As the aircraft landed, the tower confirmed a visible fire outside the aircraft. The crew swiftly used the cockpit escape windows to evacuate using ropes. Airport emergency teams immediately responded to extinguish the fire in the main cargo hold.

Extent of the Damage and Investigation

The fire caused significant damage to the upper fuselage of the aircraft. After all cargo was removed, the plane was not moved off the runway until approximately 8 hours after landing. The Brazilian Center for the Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (CENIPA) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into the incident to determine the cause and further details.
