Chaos at Manchester Airport: Power Outage Cripples Flights

Manchester Airport faced significant disruptions due to a major power outage early Sunday morning. The outage disabled crucial airport systems, resulting in flight cancellations and lengthy delays for tens of thousands of passengers.

The power outage affected a broad area in the south of Manchester, including the airport. Terminal 3, the airport’s smallest terminal, was quickly repaired and resumed operations with delays. However, the much larger Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 experienced severe issues due to significant passenger backlogs and increased numbers.

Directive to Airline Companies to Suspend Flights

Airport authorities instructed airlines to cancel some morning flights to manage the crowd and restore operations.

Airlines operating from Terminal 1 include Aer Lingus, easyJet, Emirates, Etihad, and Turkish Airlines. Terminal 2 hosts major airlines such as Air France, Cathay Pacific, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Tui, and Virgin Atlantic. Ethiopian Airlines’ flight from Addis Ababa landed in Ostend, Belgium, while Lufthansa’s flight from Frankfurt was diverted to Liverpool.

Jet2 and Aer Lingus operate from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. EasyJet’s first flight to Kefalonia, scheduled for 5:15 AM, is now expected to depart at 9:30 AM. EasyJet has canceled its morning international flights to Malaga, Milan, Venice, and Paris CDG, as well as domestic flights to Belfast International, Belfast City, Jersey, and the Isle of Man. KLM’s flight to Amsterdam, with many passengers connecting to longer flights, was also canceled, and more cancellations are expected throughout the day.

Flights from Abu Dhabi and Dubai were redirected to Birmingham, while flights from Beijing and Bahrain landed at Heathrow.

Statement from Airport Officials

A statement from the airport read: “Manchester Airport was affected by a major power outage in the area early this morning. This has caused widespread disruptions, particularly with significant delays or cancellations expected for many flights from Terminal 1 and 2. Passengers traveling from Terminal 1 or 2 are advised to check with their airlines for updated information before coming to the airport. Those flying from Terminal 3 should arrive as usual unless informed otherwise by their airlines, although they may still experience delays. We apologize for the inconvenience and aim to restore normal service as soon as possible.”

Passenger Rights and Compensation

Under airline passenger rights regulations, carriers are obliged to transport passengers on canceled flights to their final destinations as soon as possible and provide accommodation until they can continue their journey. The cost of this situation could run into millions of pounds. Passengers are urged not to go to the airport unless their airline has confirmed the flight will operate.
