Critical Changes Discussed in the Parliamentary Committee
The Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) Public Works, Reconstruction, Transportation, and Tourism Committee discussed proposed amendments to the Turkish Civil Aviation Law and other related regulations during a recent meeting. One of the most significant agenda items, Article 26, was withdrawn in response to the outcry from airport workers.
Withdrawal of Article 26
Airport workers declared that the proposed regulations would disrupt workplace peace and announced a work slowdown action planned for tomorrow. The controversial article included provisions for additional payments for pilots, chief air traffic controllers, and air traffic controllers employed by the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMI). It also proposed changes to the salary scales for Aviation Information Management Specialists, Deputy Directors, and Chiefs. The committee decided to remove this article from the proposal, taking into account the workers’ concerns.
Demands from Unions and Associations
Unions and associations representing aviation sector workers in Turkey stated that the long-awaited improvements in personal and financial rights for DHMI personnel had not been realized, negatively impacting workplace peace. An official statement noted that the bill presented to the TBMM included regulations covering only certain titles, which was deemed unacceptable.
Request for Parliamentary Agenda
Unions and associations called for the revision of Article 26 of the bill to include all DHMI employees and for an urgent, fair Aviation Compensation arrangement, compliant with EUROCONTROL standards and not burdening the economy, to be brought to the TBMM agenda. They also warned that if these demands were not met, airport workers would commence a work slowdown starting tomorrow and continue the action until their demands were fulfilled.
