According to two US officials, Iran targeted Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia. Five US Air Force refuelling aircraft were damaged in the missile attack.
Officials stated that the attack occurred in recent days and that the tanker aircraft were targeted by missiles fired by Iran. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) declined to make an official comment on the matter.
One of the officials said the aircraft that were hit were not completely destroyed but sustained damage at various levels. It was reported that no casualties occurred in the attack and that the damaged tanker aircraft were taken into the repair process.
Number of damaged aircraft increases
With the latest attack, the number of US Air Force refuelling aircraft that have been damaged or destroyed has reportedly risen to at least seven.
This development came shortly after another accident that occurred on Thursday. One of the aircraft crashed to the ground following a collision between two KC-135 refuelling aircraft. According to a statement made by the Pentagon on Friday, six crew members lost their lives in the accident.
Tensions escalating in the region
Iran’s attacks are considered to be retaliation for the “Operation Epic Fury” carried out by the United States in the region. The Tehran administration has recently increased attacks targeting US troops and military assets in the region.
It was also reported that a US soldier who was seriously injured in an attack on another US base in Saudi Arabia on 1 March later died.
