The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence has received the 48th F-35B Lightning II delivery. Thus, while the country’s initial F-35B procurement process has been completed, the total target of 138 aircraft has been maintained.
48th F-35B Delivered
The United Kingdom Ministry of Defence announced that, as of 27 March, it had received the 48th Lockheed Martin-produced F-35B Lightning II fighter aircraft.
With this delivery, the United Kingdom’s first procurement package has been completed. It was recalled that the first aircraft were deployed to RAF Marham base in June 2018.
Target of a 138-Aircraft Fleet
The United Kingdom had previously stated that it requires a total of 138 F-35B aircraft. However, only 48 aircraft were ordered in the initial phase.
Officials stated that this target remains in long-term planning, noting that a small portion of the future fleet is expected to consist of the F-35A variant.

Used in Aircraft Carrier Operations
F-35B aircraft are actively deployed, particularly on aircraft carriers such as HMS Queen Elizabeth.
It was reported that the fleet is currently being used in ongoing operations in the Middle East, especially in patrol missions conducted via RAF Akrotiri.
Accidents and Operational Challenges on the Agenda
An F-35B aircraft with tail number ZM152 from the fleet crashed into the Mediterranean on 17 November 2021 due to a malfunction during takeoff from HMS Queen Elizabeth. The wreckage of the aircraft was recovered from the sea in early December 2021.
According to reports in the British press, the current fleet faces issues such as:
- Personnel shortages
- Low readiness levels
- Delays in the integration of weapons and equipment
Infrastructure and Procurement Process Ongoing
Among the factors affecting the fleet’s ability to reach full capacity is that land-based infrastructure projects in the United Kingdom have not yet been completed.
On the other hand, it is stated that no official contract has yet been signed for the second procurement package, while current constraints continue to limit operational effectiveness.
