According to a report sourced from the Wall Street Journal, a US E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft was damaged and 12 personnel were injured in an Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
Iran Targets US Base in Saudi Arabia
According to information based on US and Arab officials, Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia was targeted in an attack carried out by Iran on Friday. The report cited by the Wall Street Journal stated that both missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles were used in the attack.
It was reported that 12 military personnel were injured in the attack, and multiple US refuelling aircraft were also damaged.
Critical Early Warning Aircraft Also Hit
It was noted that the US-made E-3 Sentry AWACS aircraft was among the air assets damaged in the attack. The aircraft plays a critical role in airspace control and battle management.
According to military sources, the E-3 Sentry can detect missiles, aircraft, and unmanned aerial vehicles from long range, while also providing commanders with real-time operational data.
“Serious Situation” Warning from Experts
Retired US Air Force Colonel John “JV” Venable drew attention to the strategic impact of the attack. Venable emphasised the seriousness of the incident, stating that the US’s situational awareness in the region could be affected.
Experts point out that such aircraft, which are available in limited numbers in the US inventory, are difficult to replace in a short time.
