Thailand Conducts First Combat Mission with Gripen Fighters: Strategic Deal with Sweden Nears

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) has deployed Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets in live combat for the first time, taking a significant step in strengthening regional security. Following this development, the country is preparing to formalise a major fighter aircraft agreement with Sweden.

Gripen Jets Used in Combat for the First Time

Last month, during clashes along the Thailand-Cambodia border, Gripen E/F jets were deployed. The aircraft carried out precision strikes against Cambodian military positions, supporting combat operations. This marks Thailand’s first live combat use of Gripen jets.

Strategic Agreement with Sweden on the Horizon

On Tuesday, 26 August, the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the first stage of the agreement will be signed during a high-level visit to Sweden, led by Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa. Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura stated that the visit would be a turning point, transforming Thai-Swedish relations into a strategic partnership.

As part of the visit, Maris Sangiampongsa will meet his Swedish counterpart, Maria Malmer Stenergard, to discuss regional security, defence cooperation, and the expansion of strategic ties.

Gripen E/F Capabilities and Significance

The Gripen E/F stands out as an attractive platform for medium-sized air forces thanks to its advanced radar systems, electronic warfare capabilities, and cost-effective operation. Thailand has long operated earlier Gripen models, and the new agreement is expected to include upgraded aircraft, joint training, and technology sharing.

Regional Security and Modernisation

Defence analysts view the agreement as a sign of Thailand’s intention to modernise its air force amid rising regional tensions. For Sweden, the move represents an opportunity to strengthen defence and diplomatic ties with a key Southeast Asian nation.
