SunExpress CEO Max Kownatzki announced at a press conference in Izmir that they will launch direct flights from Izmir to Madrid, Prague, Pristina, Rome, Sarajevo, Tirana, and Warsaw this summer.
Contribution to Izmir’s Tourism Potential
Kownatzki stated, “We will continue to promote Izmir and contribute to both Izmir and Turkey’s tourism.” He emphasized that the new routes expand Izmir’s flight network and provide different travel experiences throughout the seasons.
Targeting 60 Million Tourists
Kownatzki mentioned that they will continue their efforts to promote Izmir’s rich history, cultural heritage, and nature to the world as Turkey’s tourism ambassador. He expressed that they balanced the loss of passengers during the pandemic by focusing on domestic flights and Turkish citizens living in Europe. He said they carried 12.6 million passengers in 2023 and aimed to carry 15 million passengers in 2024.
Flight Operations
SunExpress operates 271 international flights per week from Izmir to 46 destinations. They also offer flights to domestic destinations such as Adana, Antalya, Diyarbakir, Erzurum, Gaziantep, Kayseri, Konya, Malatya, Mardin, Samsun, Trabzon, and Van. In 2023, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport hosted 4.1 million passengers on international flights, with 2.3 million of them flying with SunExpress.
Significant Contribution to Turkey’s Tourism Potential
Kownatzki stated that they are observing the growth of Turkey’s tourism market and highlighted Turkey’s position as the top destination in Western Europe with a target of 60 million tourists. SunExpress aims to contribute to this goal by carrying 15 million passengers.
