Surface damage at Antalya Airport has caused significant disruptions in air traffic. Due to the damaged runway, many planes were diverted to different airports, and the airport’s aircraft parking spots were completely filled.
Damage was detected on runway 36C, one of the three runways at Antalya Airport. The surface deterioration on the runway posed a risk of damaging aircraft landing gear and jet engines, prompting a swift response from the crews, who immediately began repair work on the runway.
During this process, all air traffic at the airport had to be redirected to other runways. While repair work continued on runway 36C, maintenance vehicles were brought onto the runway. However, as the work progressed, weather conditions in Antalya quickly worsened. Flights at the airport were completely halted due to high winds that turned into a storm.
With the busy summer season, many planes began to wait in the air. As the waiting time extended, passenger planes were diverted to other nearby airports. The inability to perform takeoffs at Antalya Airport caused congestion in parking areas, filling all available positions.
Effects of the Storm
A similar situation occurred last Friday (June 7, 2024). Inappropriate weather conditions caused by a storm led to planes being diverted to different airports. (tolgaozbek)
