The experimental prototype of Russia’s airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, the A-100, has entered the final stage of full-scale testing of its long-range radar detection system. According to announcements made on June 12, 2024, these tests are being conducted under combat-like conditions.
A-100 Prototype Under Combat-Like Testing
Developed by Beriev Aircraft Company and Vega Radio Engineering Corporation, the A-100 can track up to 301 targets simultaneously at a distance of up to 550 km. Equipped with the new “Vega Premier” active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, the aircraft boasts extensive radar capabilities.
Radar System’s Power and Capabilities
The A-100’s radar can detect targets with a cross-section of 0.1 m² at 200 km, 3 m² at 550 km, and 0.01 m² at 110 km. It can also identify large surface targets, such as destroyers, at distances up to 450 km. The radar potentially operates in the S/X or L/S band wavelengths.
Advanced Avionics and Targeting Systems
Outfitted with various avionics, the A-100 can transmit real-time data to Su-30 and Su-35S fighter jets. The Polyana-D4M1 automatic control system facilitates target distribution among S-400, S-300V4, and Buk-M3A air defense systems, enabling beyond-visual-range targeting.
Project Began in 2010, Faced Various Challenges
Initiated in the early 2010s, the A-100 project experienced delays due to international sanctions and technological challenges. The A-100 made its first flight in November 2017, and after extensive testing, it conducted its first flight with a fully operational radar system in February 2022. It is expected to achieve full operational capability and enter serial production in 2024.
Built on a Modernized Il-76MD-90A Airframe
The A-100 is based on the modernized Il-76MD-90A airframe, a version of the Il-76 military transport aircraft, and is powered by four Aviadvigatel PS-90A-76 turbofan engines. In addition to surveillance missions, it performs command and control functions, directing air, land, and sea forces.
