In recent days, Russian border guards have been preventing Uzbekistan citizens from entering the country at airports and other checkpoints. Uzbekistan citizens who are unable to enter the country are stranded at airports. While the Uzbekistan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet made a statement on the matter, human rights activists in Russia and Uzbekistan citizens confirm the situation’s accuracy.
Human rights advocate Valat Chupik reported that the Russian government initiated mass arrests of individuals attempting to enter the country or arriving by air on April 24, 2024. Chupik highlighted that as of May 1, approximately 4,500 individuals have been detained at Russian airports, with an equal number being denied entry at land checkpoints.
Chupik stated, “One-fourth of those detained without entry to Russia are citizens of Tajikistan, while two percent are migrants from Uzbekistan.” According to Chupik, most of those detained will be deported within one or two days. In some cases, deportations have taken up to a week, with detainees in deportation centers subjected to various forms of abuse.
Chupik also mentioned that individuals apprehended by border guards since April 24 have been left without food and water, facing difficulties even in accessing restrooms. Furthermore, their phones have been confiscated without explanation.
