Pegasus Airlines has launched direct flights from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (ISG) to Edinburgh (EDI), the capital of Scotland, aiming to strengthen tourism, trade, and cultural relations between Turkey and Scotland. This new route commenced on June 27 and will operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays. The frequency is planned to increase to four times a week by the last week of July.
This new route marks the seventh new international destination Pegasus Airlines has launched in 2024. Previously, the airline opened routes to Zagreb (ZAG) in Croatia, Sphinx (SPX) in Egypt, Aktau (SCO) in Kazakhstan, Sofia (SOF) in Bulgaria, Chisinau (RMO) in Moldova, and Bratislava (BTS) in Slovakia.
With this development, ISG now connects to a total of 164 destinations, including 40 domestic and 124 international routes across 54 countries.
United Kingdom Among the Top 5 Countries by Passenger Numbers
Regarding the new route opening, ISG CEO Alp Er Tunga ERSOY said, “The United Kingdom has always been among the top five countries in terms of passenger numbers for Sabiha Gökçen. There are strong historical ties, economic relations, and significant tourism partnerships between the two countries. Last year, Turkey hosted approximately 4 million tourists from the United Kingdom. Our trade volume with the UK, Turkey’s fourth-largest export market, reached 19.5 billion dollars in 2023. We expect this new route to further strengthen our warm relations, enhance cooperation opportunities, and bring an additional 21,000 international passengers to our airport for the remainder of the year.”
Contribution to Turkey’s Tourism Potential
Pegasus Airlines CEO Güliz Öztürk stated that each new route they open significantly contributes to Turkey’s tourism potential, adding, “We are delighted to take another step forward in our mission with our direct flights from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport to Edinburgh. As we expand our flight network, we will continue to connect Turkey with other countries both culturally and economically.”
