A passenger aboard a United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 8 attempted to open an aircraft door at 36,000 feet, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing in Washington.
The incident occurred on a United Airlines flight departing from Newark Liberty International Airport and once again brought commercial aviation security concerns into the spotlight. A passenger aboard the Boeing 737 MAX 8, which had departed for Guatemala City, allegedly attempted to open an emergency exit door while the aircraft was cruising at 36,000 feet.
Following the incident, the pilot declared an emergency to air traffic control, and the aircraft diverted to Washington D.C.’s Washington Dulles International Airport.
Incident Took Place on United Airlines Flight 1551
The incident occurred Thursday night aboard United Airlines Flight 1551, operated by a Boeing 737 MAX 8 carrying 145 passengers and six crew members.
According to air traffic control recordings, the unruly passenger attempted to open Door 2L during the flight. The same passenger was later reported to have physically assaulted another passenger onboard.
Communications between the pilot and the control tower highlighted the seriousness of the situation.
Pilot: “He Tried to Open the Door at 36,000 Feet”
According to air traffic control recordings, the tower controller asked the pilot:
“United 1551, they’re asking what door the passenger tried to open.”
The pilot responded:
“Door 2L at 36,000 feet and then assaulted another passenger.”
The tower also asked whether there were any injuries onboard. The pilot stated that there were no known injuries.
Aircraft Made Emergency Landing at Washington Dulles
Following the incident, the aircraft was diverted to Washington Dulles International Airport under standard safety procedures. The Boeing 737 MAX 8 landed safely at 8:38 p.m. local time.
United Airlines later confirmed that the aircraft was met by law enforcement authorities upon arrival.
The airline also announced that the flight was canceled, a replacement flight was scheduled for Friday morning, and hotel accommodations were provided for passengers.
FBI Launches Investigation Into Incident
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that agents responded to the incident at Dulles Airport. However, authorities have not yet released official information regarding the passenger’s identity or potential charges.
