The Botany, a new luxury resort on the western tip of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, opens this winter with 20 villas dotting 300 acres inside The Preserve at Botany Bay. The property sits near Mermaid’s Chair, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic, is steps from Sandy Bay Beach and is just minutes from the airport.
“Luxury used to mean more,” said Bashar Wali, founder and CEO of Practice Hospitality, which operates the resort, in a press statement. “Here it means less, on purpose. Fewer villas. More land left alone. The western tip of St. Thomas does not need our improvement. It needs our restraint. That is the whole design.”
Planning starts before arrival. A pre-arrival team works with each guest ahead of the stay to arrange dining, wellness experiences and other details in advance. Your clients are met at an overlook above the bay where staff takes over luggage before a drive down through the preserve to the resort. Reception occupies an open-air pavilion set between two pools, each with its own bar.
Villas feature private terraces, vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, floor-to-ceiling glass and native Virgin Islands blue volcanic stone, with both indoor and outdoor showers. Three guestroom types are available: the Villa King, a single guestroom facing the coastline with a private terrace; the Villa Suite, a 1-bedroom layout with a living area and dining space; and the Villa Residence, 2- and 3-bedroom homes, some with private pools.
Two pools anchor the property: the curved Sequence Pool overlooking the bay and Mermaid’s Chair, and the Legacy Pool set near the sand. The spa includes three treatment rooms, a couple’s suite, a hot tub and indoor and outdoor relaxation space, alongside a fitness center and yoga pavilion. Ginger Thomas, named for the island’s national flower, serves Caribbean-inspired fine dining, while a boutique and coffee shop offer specialty coffee, light bites and beach picnics. The resort also offers more than 50,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor event space for weddings, retreats and other gatherings.
The Botany runs largely on solar power, drawing away from the island grid. Goats graze beneath the panels to manage brush growth, and every villa and public building is built to catch and store rainwater. Reclaimed materials appear throughout the property’s signage and finishes.
The Botany joins the L.V.X. Collection within Preferred Hotels & Resorts. It adds to the Practice Hospitality portfolio, which includes The Compton in Bentonville, Arkansas, the company’s most recent opening, which debuted in 2025.
