Director General of the State Airports Authority, Hüseyin Keskin, stated that Istanbul Airport is the only airport outside the Americas with triple parallel runways and announced the commencement of construction for new runways. Speaking at the Parliamentary Commission for Public Works, Reconstruction, Transport, and Tourism, Keskin mentioned that Istanbul Airport’s master plan includes six runways, of which three are currently in use. “The fourth runway at Istanbul Airport is under construction. The fifth runway will be coming soon,” he said.
Keskin noted that the annual passenger count at Istanbul Airport has reached 80 million. “When the passenger count reaches 89 million, we will start the construction of another runway. When it hits 100 million, we will move to the second terminal. When it reaches 120 million, we will build the other terminal,” he added.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu also highlighted that in April, Istanbul Airport saw the highest increase in passenger numbers among Europe’s major airports compared to the pre-pandemic period in April 2019. “Istanbul Airport, with 6,593,092 passengers, recorded a 10.5% increase and became Europe’s second busiest airport after London Heathrow. Following Istanbul Airport were Paris, Amsterdam, and Madrid airports,” said Uraloğlu. He also noted that the cargo volume transported from Istanbul Airport in April increased by 42.7%.
