Egypt-based airline Air Cairo has made its inaugural flight to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW).
According to a statement from SAW, Air Cairo will operate Cairo (CAI) to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) flights twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, using a 109-seat Embraer E-190 LR aircraft. The airline aims to increase its flight frequency to five times a week in the future.
Air Cairo is the fifth airline to operate the SAW-CAI route, joining Pegasus and AJet’s Cairo-Sphinx (SPX) route, as well as Nile Air and Air Arabia Egypt from Cairo (CAI). The new international service is expected to contribute an additional 13,000 passengers to the airport throughout the rest of the year.
The Air Cairo CAI route will strengthen the ties between Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and Istanbul, a city renowned for its rich history and culture. This connection will facilitate access from SAW to tourist attractions in Egypt such as the Cairo Museum, the Pyramids, and the areas around the Nile River.
In the statement, SAW Acting CEO Kerem Maybek highlighted last year’s strategic cooperation agreement between Turkey and Egypt, noting that the visa-on-arrival facility for Turkish citizens has strengthened relations between the two countries.
Maybek mentioned that the visa-on-arrival facility has led to a significant increase in flights from SAW to Egypt. “Compared to April 2023, the monthly passenger count to Egypt in April 2024 increased by 57%, rising from 35,000 to 55,000. We aim to further increase these numbers with Air Cairo, our eighth route to Egypt. As Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, we are proud to strengthen the strategic connections between the two countries,” he said.
