Turkish Airlines (THY) announced significant appointments through an official statement on the Public Disclosure Platform (KAP). According to the decision by the Board of Directors, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat has been appointed as the Chairman of the Board, while Mr. Şekib Avdagiç has been assigned as the Vice Chairman of the Board.
Additionally, the following appointments were made: Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat was designated as the Chairman of the Executive Committee, and Mr. Şekib Avdagiç as the Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Şeker, Dr. Melih Şükrü Ecertaş, and Mr. Ramazan Sarı have started their roles as Members of the Executive Committee.
THY aims to continue its restructuring and growth process with a more effective and efficient management approach.
Who is Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat?
Born in 1959 in Konya, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat graduated from Istanbul Technical University in 1981 with a degree in Industrial Engineering. He completed his master’s degree in Operations Research at Stanford University in 1984 and his Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan in 1988.
Prof. Dr. Bolat began his career in 1981 as a design and production engineer at Yıldız Kalıp Company. Between 1985 and 1988, he served as a research assistant and lecturer at the University of Michigan. From 1988 to 2005, he held various academic positions, including assistant professor, associate professor, and professor, at King Saud University’s Department of Industrial Engineering in Riyadh.
In 2005, Prof. Dr. Bolat was appointed Head of Investment Management at Turkish Airlines. From 2012 to 2022, he served as Deputy General Manager (Investment and Technology) at Turkish Airlines. During his tenure, he managed the strategic growth plan of Turkish Airlines and led the team responsible for acquiring the necessary aircraft for the airline’s fleet. He also oversaw international relations and alliances, state relations, and commercial agreements with airline partners, improving bilateral relations and expanding partnerships and flight networks. Prof. Dr. Bolat led the feasibility studies for Turkish Airlines’ alliance selection project. Since 2022, he has served as Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee at Turkish Airlines.
Who is Şekib Avdagiç?
Born in Zenica (Bosnia and Herzegovina) in 1959, Şekib Avdagiç completed his primary and secondary education in Istanbul after starting in Cologne, Germany, and graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Istanbul Technical University in 1982. In 1988, he completed the Business Administration Specialization Program at Istanbul University’s Faculty of Business Administration with distinction. Avdagiç currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors and executive in companies operating in the automotive supply industry. He speaks English and Bosnian, is married, and has two children.
Since April 2018, he has been the Chairman of the Board of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce. As of May 31, 2023, he has been serving as Vice President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB).
Since September 2019, he has been the Vice President of the Danube Chambers of Commerce Association. Since January 2022, he has been an Independent Board Member and Executive Committee Member of Turkish Airlines. On July 11, 2023, he took over as President of the Service Exporters’ Association.
Avdagiç was one of the 12 founders of MÜSİAD (Independent Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association) in 1990 and served as Vice President until 2000.
He was elected as a Member of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce Assembly in 1995. He served as a Board Member from 2005 to 2009, Vice Chairman from 2009 to 2013, and Assembly President from 2013 to 2018.
Between 2009 and 2011, he was the Executive Board Chairman of the 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency. From 2013 to 2019, he served as Chairman of the Composite Industrialists Association.
Additionally, Avdagiç serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the ITU Research and Commercialization Foundation, ITU Education and Social Services Foundation, TUGEV (Tourism Development and Education Foundation), ICVB (Istanbul Convention and Visitors Bureau), and the Istanbul World Trade Center; Vice Chairman of the Board at Teknopark Istanbul; Board Member at DEİK (Foreign Economic Relations Board), ISTKA (Istanbul Development Agency), and TAYSAD (Association of Automotive Parts and Components Manufacturers); Trustee at the International University of Sarajevo, Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Islamic Science History Research Foundation, and Istanbul Technical University Development Foundation; and a member of the ITU Advisory Board and YÖK – University-Industry Cooperation (ÜSİ) Commission.
