New CEO Badr Al Meer: Qatar Airways’ Giant Aircraft Order on the Way

Qatar Airways’ newly appointed CEO, Badr Al Meer, announced on Monday that the airline is in discussions with Boeing and Airbus regarding a potential wide-body aircraft order. While Al Meer did not confirm the exact number of planes, he mentioned that the order would be in the “three-digit range.” According to a report published by Bloomberg on Sunday, the airline is looking to purchase approximately 200 Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X wide-body jets.

Al Meer stated that while the figures are mostly accurate, the 200-jet order figure is about 30% off. A decision is expected to be made by the end of next month, coinciding with the Farnborough Air Show in the UK.

Regarding the airline’s expansion plans, Al Meer highlighted that Qatar Airways is preparing to announce a promising deal with an airline in South Africa within the next two to three months. Additionally, he noted that the airline is actively engaged in expanding its network of destinations in Australia.

“We are eager to grow and expand further in the Australian market,” Al Meer added, emphasizing that the airline maintains ongoing communication with the Australian government.
