A New Right for Passengers: Free Drinking Water Throughout the Flight
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu has introduced a significant new regulation for air travel. From now on, airline passengers will be offered complimentary drinking water. According to the decision, all airlines will be obliged to provide each passenger with at least 200 millilitres of drinking water during flights.
In a written statement, Minister Uraloğlu said:
“Under the directive sent by our Directorate General of Civil Aviation to all passenger-carrying airline operators, it will be mandatory to provide each passenger with at least 200 millilitres of complimentary drinking water during flights. Flight duration will not be taken into account within the scope of this regulation.”
Enhancing Passenger Satisfaction and Flight Safety
Minister Uraloğlu underlined that the decision is also crucial for flight safety and reducing health risks. He highlighted that during long waits, particularly in the summer months, or in cases where cabin ventilation is insufficient, lack of water could cause serious health issues.
“Risks can range from headaches and loss of concentration to even medical emergencies. With this regulation, we aim to both minimise health risks and improve flight satisfaction,” Uraloğlu stated, noting that the measure would directly improve passengers’ quality of life.
Compliance with International Standards
The Minister stressed that the regulation will apply to both domestic and international flights, marking an important step towards alignment with international aviation standards.
“In international best practice examples, meeting passengers’ basic needs is considered the responsibility of operators. Providing complimentary drinking water will increase both passenger satisfaction and the international reputation of our airlines,” he said.
Official Directive to Airlines
The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has formally communicated this decision to all airline operators through the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Accordingly, passengers will benefit from complimentary water service on both short- and long-haul flights.
Considering past criticism of paid water sales, especially by low-cost airlines, this new practice is expected to generate positive feedback among passengers.
