Delta Air Lines will cut three key inter-city routes from John F. Kennedy International Airport(JFK), with the airline planning to axe nonstop services to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Memphis International Airport (MEM) and St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). All of these routes were only introduced last year, and instead will now only be served by Delta to and from LaGuardia Airport (LGA).
Delta’s exit on these city pairs from JFK will leave only New York hometown airline JetBlue Airways flying one of the routes from New York’s largest airport, while all other cities are served from both Newark Liberty International Airport (United) and LaGuardia ( United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Delta, and American Airlines) on select routes.
Cutting Ties With New York-JFK & Focusing Operations At LaGuardia
Delta has had an on-again, off-again relationship with all of these city pairs, having previously connected Houston to JFK between 2008 and 2011, again between 2019 and 2020, and resumed nonstop flights last year. Memphis has a similar pattern, with flights operating between 2009 and 2012, and then again last year.
St. Louis has once again seen the flights to JFK axed; the airline flew between the two airports for years up until 2015, and then again from 2025. Load factors on all routes have been reasonable, apart from St. Louis, which has struggled to get above 70%, according to Cirium, an online aviation analytics company.
Delta’s exit on these routes could signal the airline’s wider plans to utilize the highly coveted JFK slots for more profitable, mainline domestic and international services.
Moving Its Focus To LaGuardia For Memphis, Houston & St. Louis
While Delta operates a long list of services at JFK, its operations at LaGuardia see the airline operate more departing domestic flights from LGA than JFK. In Q3 of 2026, DL will operate a total of 21,597 departing domestic flights from LaGuardia, more than 6,857 more than that of JFK, where the airline has 14,740 departures scheduled.
LaGuardia is the airline’s fifth largest base, after that of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) and Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Other callouts include Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and the up-and-coming Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS).

Top Domestic Network By Flights For Delta From JFK
Delta’s most popular routes for domestic flights from JFK are services to Los Angeles, Atlanta, San Francisco International Airport (SFO), Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Boston. Other popular routes include Las Vegas, Nashville, Detroit, Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU) and Seattle. The airline’s most popular international routes for this quarter are to Paris, Toronto, Santo Domingo, Santiago, and Rome.
Los Angeles, the busiest route overall at JFK, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), sees three airlines operating the airport pair: American, Delta, and JetBlue. In the calendar year of 2025, a total of 1.44 million passengers traveled between the two airports. The second busiest route from JFK, and the third busiest overall, is to San Francisco, with Alaska Airlines joining American, Delta, and JetBlue operating the route and transporting 941,000 passengers in 2025.
Delta’s decision to move three of its regional services to LaGuardia will be a blow for those who regularly travel the routes to and from Houston, Memphis, and St. Louis; however, there will still be plenty of choice for travel to all three major New York airports, with LaGuardia being the focus for Delta in this network shakeup.
