11 p.m.: After nearly 12 hours of searching and covering 124 square miles, the US Coast Guard announced just before 11 p.m. they had ceased operations.
Even after searching for hours after sundown, the USCG called it quits tonight.
"The aircraft reportedly entered the water at a high rate of speed and sank with no one observed disembarking the aircraft," the USCG said tonight.
The US Coast Guard is now (as of 7 p.m. Monday night) searching for a pilot whose plane went down off the Oregon coast near Newport.
The US Coast Guard (Sector Columbia River) received the initial report at approximately 12:54 p.m., the agency said on social.
USCG Station Yaquina Bay and AIRFAC Newport immediately responded. Two 47-foot Motor Lifeboats and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter have been conducting search efforts.
“The aircraft is a Beechcraft B95,” the USCG said.
In the latest update about 6 p.m., the agency said the aircraft was seen sinking offshore right after hitting the ocean. Some unconfirmed reports have it hitting as little as 200 feet from Yaquina Head.
The only person onboard was the 78-year-old male pilot. He remains unaccounted for.
