Five people lost their lives in a small aircraft crash that occurred in the Hill Country region of the U.S. state of Texas. The Cessna 421C aircraft crashed into a wooded area near the city of Wimberley on Thursday night.
Officials from Hays County and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated that there was one pilot and four passengers on board the aircraft and that there were no survivors. The incident was reported to have occurred at night, approximately 40 miles southwest of Austin.
Moments when radar contact was lost
According to FAA data, the aircraft had departed from Amarillo in northwest Texas and was heading to New Braunfels National Airport. The flight lasted approximately two hours, and it was stated that radar contact was lost shortly before reaching the destination.
Air traffic control records revealed that the aircraft began to exhibit irregular movements and then disappeared from radar. Emergency services were notified after another pilot in the same airspace reported receiving a distress signal from an emergency locator transmitter.
“The engine sound changed, then came the impact”
Eyewitnesses living near the crash site reported that the aircraft made abnormal engine noises before it went down. Stacey Rohr, speaking to local television channel KEYE-TV, described the moment of impact as “a violent vibration followed by rising flames.”
Another eyewitness, Cecil Keith, said that the aircraft passed over his house just before the crash and that he heard intermittent engine sounds like “pop, pop, pop.”
Debris scattered across the wooded area
Aerial footage showed that parts of the aircraft were scattered across dense woodland and that the impact spread over a wide area. Teams dispatched to the scene continued search and rescue and security operations throughout the night.
Hays County Judge Ruben Becerra confirmed the accident in a statement on social media, stating that the identities of those who lost their lives would not be shared with the public before their families were notified.
Weather conditions under review
The National Weather Service reported that partly cloudy conditions prevailed in the area shortly before the crash, but that thunderstorms developed within a few hours.
Notable air traffic density in Texas Hill Country
Wimberley and New Braunfels are among the busy tourism hubs of the Texas Hill Country region. Forested hills and regional air traffic can sometimes create challenging flight conditions, especially for small aircraft.
It was also reported that a second aircraft traveling on the same route landed safely at New Braunfels Airport. It was stated that the pilot of that flight shared the route with the aircraft involved in the दुर्घ accident but was unable to establish contact later.
