American Airlines will lead operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor’s new West Terminal, the airport’s first since 1990. The project addresses growing passenger demand and expands international capacity. Construction may begin by late 2029, with opening targeted for late 2033.
American Airlines, which handles over 40% of PHX traffic and operates 300+ daily flights, was chosen after months of evaluation. The West Terminal, positioned between Terminal 3 and Taxiway U, will accommodate widebody aircraft and serve as a gateway for global routes. It replaces demolished Terminals 1 and 2 and complements ongoing upgrades to Terminal 4.
The $4.5 billion project will be funded via passenger fees, bonds, and airport revenue, not local taxes. Design and construction phases are scheduled through 2027-2029, with modular expansion planned. Meanwhile, Terminal 4 enhancements aim to relieve pressure before the new terminal opens.
Travelers may face longer waits or limited routing options until the terminal opens in 2033. American’s dominance means most passengers will eventually experience changes in gate assignments, check-in flows, and international connectivity.
