Europe-based leisure airline SunExpress has signed two separate five-year maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) agreements with Lufthansa Technik for the maintenance of the CFM56-7B and new-generation CFM LEAP-1B engines used on its Boeing 737 fleet.
Covering the engines on SunExpress’s existing Boeing 737-800 aircraft as well as those on its rapidly growing Boeing 737-8 fleet, the agreements aim to secure the company’s operational continuity and technical reliability over the long term.
Strong Technical Cooperation Across Engine Generations
This strategic partnership also represents a significant milestone for Lufthansa Technik. While reinforcing its leading position in the established CFM56 maintenance market, the company is simultaneously expanding its presence in the fast-growing LEAP-1B engine segment.
The majority of the maintenance activities will be carried out at Lufthansa Technik’s facilities in Hamburg. In addition, extra capacity will be provided via XEOS, the joint venture with GE Aerospace in Poland, increasing operational flexibility.

SunExpress’s expanding fleet places the airline under increasing pressure to balance competitive cost management with high maintenance reliability. According to industry experts, this agreement could set a new benchmark for MRO service quality and encourage rival airlines to pursue similar strategic partnerships.
In particular, tightening regulations for LEAP engines operating in harsh and dusty environments, global delays in engine deliveries, and certification processes expected to extend until 2026 will play a decisive role in SunExpress’s maintenance and operational planning.
