As summer begins, Van is overshadowed by a long-standing airplane issue. Van Ferit Melen Airport is not only preferred by the residents of Van but also by neighboring provinces and Iranians, highlighting the deficiencies in the city’s air transportation. The airport, unable to meet the increased travel demand post-pandemic, has been in the spotlight for flight cancellations and delays during holiday peaks and the Van Culture Route Festival.
Tourism professional Murat Beyaz commented on the situation, emphasizing that “Van Ferit Melen Airport cannot meet the growing population and travel demands, and due to the difficulty in finding tickets and high prices, people’s freedom to travel is restricted.” Beyaz also pointed out that considering Van’s economic weaknesses, domestic ticket prices being far above global standards is particularly concerning.
Beyaz noted that even those wanting to attend the Van Culture Route Festival couldn’t find tickets, saying, “Despite warnings made in advance for the festival, the inadequacy of flight services harms Van’s promotion and the festival’s national significance.”
Beyaz stressed that this chronic flight issue in the city must be resolved as soon as possible, warning that “the problem will continue unless radical measures are taken.” Meanwhile, residents of Van continue to voice their frustrations regarding the flight crisis on social media.
