The US’s largest aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford has reached the Red Sea after transiting the Suez Canal. The deployment of the massive US Navy warship to the region has drawn attention amid rising military tensions in the Middle East.
According to a report by the United States Naval Institute (USNI), the aircraft carrier was deployed to the Middle East due to increasing security risks in the region.
The Pentagon shared photos with the public showing the transit of USS Gerald R. Ford and the US destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) through the Suez Canal.
Mission planned until 2027
In a previous statement, the Pentagon said that a decision had been made in mid-February to deploy the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford to the Middle East, and that its mission is planned to continue until May next year.
With this development, two US aircraft carriers have begun operating in the region at the same time. While USS Gerald R. Ford is operating in the Red Sea, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) is on duty in the Arabian Sea.
According to open-source analyses, the US has increased its military presence in the Middle East to its highest level in recent years following the war that began with Iran.
How did tensions begin in the region?
Tensions escalated when Israel and the United States launched a military strike on Iran on February 28 while negotiations between Tehran and Washington were ongoing.
In response, Iran launched attacks on designated targets in several regional countries hosting US bases, particularly Kuwait, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.
It was reported that in the attacks carried out by Israel and the United States, Ali Khamenei, the religious leader of Iran, and many senior officials lost their lives.
Hossein Kermanpour, spokesperson for the Iranian Ministry of Health, announced that 926 people were killed in the attacks. Israel stated that 11 people have been killed since the start of the mutual attacks and 502 people have been injured, including individuals who suffered panic attacks.
