Turkey is preparing to mark a historic milestone in its naval capabilities. The Presidency of Defence Industries has officially announced a domestically-built aircraft carrier project, in cooperation with Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, which will measure 300 metres in length. To be constructed at shipyards in Istanbul, this massive platform will become the largest military naval vessel ever developed by Turkey.
Defence Industries President Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün revealed that the ship’s original planned length of 285 metres has been extended to 300 metres. With its design, carrying capacity, and technological superiority, the project is set to draw attention not only regionally but also on a global scale.
High Air Power and Modern Equipment
The next-generation aircraft carrier will be equipped with fixed-wing aircraft, attack helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs/UCAVs). It is expected to significantly enhance Turkey’s capacity for air operations launched from the sea.
A Size to Surpass European Giants
Upon completion, Turkey’s aircraft carrier will surpass:

In comparison, the largest U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, measures 337 metres. With this project, Turkey aims to own one of the largest aircraft carriers outside of the United States.
Turkey–Spain Strategic Partnership Strengthened
The project marks a new phase of strategic cooperation with Spain’s Navantia, the company previously involved in the construction of Turkey’s TCG Anadolu. Haluk Görgün stated that Spanish engineering expertise will again be utilized, with work ongoing on an original design aligned with modern naval warfare concepts.

The aircraft carrier project is being closely monitored in Greece and has attracted significant coverage in the international defence press. Leading publications such as Army Recognition and Militarni have headlined Turkey’s growing power projection in the Mediterranean and its partnership with Spain.
