On the second day of the war initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran, Harir and Erbil airports in Iraq came under attack. Harir Airport was hit twice by drone strikes in the morning hours. On the same day, the US military base at Erbil International Airport was targeted with missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. Large-scale smoke and explosions were reported as a result of the attacks.
The Harir strikes were reportedly more powerful compared to previous operations. It was reported that Iran used ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles in the attack on the base in Erbil. Civilians at the airports were evacuated, and security forces were dispatched to the scene.

The attacks were carried out in response to the joint air operations launched by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, 2026. As part of its retaliation, Iran also carried out attacks on US bases in Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.
Among those killed in the war were senior Iranian leaders including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his advisor Ali Shamkhani, Chief of General Staff Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander-in-Chief Mohammad Pakpour. The attacks on Harir and Erbil placed coalition forces in Iraq on high alert and increased regional security risks.
