Russian Shahed Drones Cross into NATO Territory: Poland Shoots Down UAVs Violating Its Airspace

Russia’s Shahed drone attacks on Ukraine have now crossed NATO borders. Poland announced that it shot down drones violating its airspace, temporarily closing critical airports.

The Polish Armed Forces confirmed that Russian-made Shahed drones entered their airspace overnight. Radar records detected dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles, some of which were shot down by Poland’s air defense systems. Authorities described the incident as an “unprecedented violation.”

Critical Airports Closed

Warsaw Chopin, Modlin, Lublin, and Rzeszów airports were temporarily closed due to the incident. Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport drew particular attention as a key logistics hub for transferring Western weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

Polish Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk stated that they are in constant contact with NATO command.

Political and International Reactions

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said he remained in continuous communication with President Karol Nawrocki and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. Tusk called the government for an emergency meeting and briefed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin commented that Russia is testing NATO’s resolve with these violations, calling it “a serious warning.”
