Turkish Airlines to Lead the Next Consolidation Step in EMEA

Fitch Ratings evaluates THY’s minority stake acquisition in Air Europa. The €300 million investment is expected to expand THY’s flight network in Latin America and Spain.

Turkish Airlines Enters Fitch’s Radar with Air Europa Share Acquisition

Fitch Ratings stated that Turkish Airlines’ (THY) minority stake purchase in Air Europa will strengthen the airline’s global competitiveness by expanding its network in Latin America and Spain.

Praise for THY from Fitch

International credit rating agency Fitch Ratings evaluated Turkish Airlines’ (THY) acquisition of a minority stake in the Spanish carrier Air Europa. The report highlighted that this move will expand THY’s flight network in Latin America and Spain.

Fitch noted that while the acquisition would have a limited impact on THY’s balance sheet, it would make a significant contribution to passenger and air cargo operations.

A Strong Step in Latin America and Spain

According to Fitch’s assessment:

  • Air Europa holds a strong position on South American routes.

  • It is the second-largest player at Madrid-Barajas Airport, offering strategic advantages.

  • THY’s minority stake in Air Europa will give the airline access to rapidly growing Latin America–Europe routes.

€300 Million Investment

It was noted that THY will purchase the minority stake in Air Europa for €300 million.
The acquisition is expected to be completed within 6 to 12 months following regulatory approvals.

A Wave of Consolidation in European Aviation

Fitch also stated that with its investment in Air Europa, THY is following in the footsteps of major European airline groups such as Air France-KLM and Lufthansa, highlighting a trend of minority stake acquisitions and strategic partnerships across the sector.

The statement pointed out that the next potential consolidation move in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region could involve TAP Air Portugal.

THY’s Previous Statement

On 19 August, Turkish Airlines announced that its binding offer for the acquisition of minority shares in Air Europa had been accepted.
