The Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) convened under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Bekir Bozdağ to discuss the proposed amendments to the Turkish Civil Aviation Law, as well as changes to various laws and decrees. During the discussions on this critical proposal, the suggestions and criticisms of opposition parties took center stage.
Constitutional Violation Claims and the Refugee Issue
Selçuk Özdağ, Chairman of the Saadet Party Group and MP for Muğla, emphasized that the proposal includes provisions previously annulled by the Constitutional Court and needs to be adapted to the Presidential Government System. Meanwhile, Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, the DEM Party MP for Kocaeli, drew attention with his statements on the situation in Syria, stressing that the refugee issue has reached an undeniable scale and that the government needs to take concrete steps on this matter.
Opposition Proposals Rejected
The CHP, İYİ Party, and other opposition parties submitted proposals to amend various articles of the bill, but these were not accepted. CHP Tekirdağ MP İlhami Özcan Aygun, speaking on Article 9, accused the government of violating the Constitution and laws. However, a proposal submitted by the AK Party Group was accepted, resulting in a change to Article 9.
26 Articles Enacted, Parliament to Reconvene
A total of 26 articles were voted on and enacted despite opposition criticism. Deputy Speaker Bekir Bozdağ announced that the TBMM General Assembly would reconvene on Tuesday, July 9th, at 3:00 PM to continue discussing other matters from the committees.
