Vienna Airport and Turkish Airlines (THY) have taken their cooperation in ground handling services to a new level. Under a new five-year agreement signed between the parties, Vienna Airport’s ground handling unit will undertake all of Turkish Airlines’ operational ground services until 2030.
The agreement covers a broad operational scope, including passenger services, apron operations, aircraft cleaning services, de-icing procedures and cargo services. Turkish Airlines, which has been operating in Vienna for nearly 65 years, operates five daily flights between Vienna and its main hub in Istanbul. Carrying more than half a million passengers annually, THY ranks as the fifth-largest airline at Vienna Airport by these figures.
Vienna Airport’s selection as the exclusive ground handling partner was driven by the need for high operational reliability at Vienna, one of Europe’s most punctual airports. In order to utilise its carefully planned fleet in the most efficient way with short turnaround times, Turkish Airlines relies on the airport’s established and well-integrated processes.
Industry research shows that Vienna Airport holds a market share of over 80 per cent in the ground handling services market, and the new agreement aims to provide THY with consistent quality standards across the entire service chain. This is of strategic importance, particularly in terms of the continuity and on-time performance of Istanbul connecting flights.
Cargo Transportation Also at the Core of the Agreement
In addition to passenger transportation, cargo operations also play a significant role in the new cooperation. Turkish Airlines makes extensive use of the lower-deck cargo holds of its passenger aircraft, while Vienna Airport provides dedicated services for these operations at its Air Cargo Centre. The centre also enables the temperature-controlled transportation of sensitive products such as pharmaceuticals.
According to market analyses, the agreement further strengthens Vienna’s position as a key logistics transit hub between Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The synergy between efficient ground handling services and high flight frequency increases the airport’s attractiveness in terms of transit cargo.
The long-term agreement, valid until 2030, provides planning security for both parties amid volatile market conditions. While Vienna Airport maintains personnel stability, Turkish Airlines secures priority ground handling capacity at one of Europe’s key hubs.
Thanks to Turkish Airlines’ membership in Star Alliance, the standardised ground handling services provided by Vienna Airport also facilitate operational alignment with alliance member airlines, particularly Austrian Airlines. Officials emphasise that this cooperation plays a critical role in the growth strategies of both organisations within Europe’s highly competitive air transport market.
