Turkish Airlines is suspending its Leipzig–Istanbul flights as of May 2. The route, which has been operating since 2012, has been put on hold due to increasing cost pressures.
Rising cost pressure has led to a contraction in the aviation network
Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport is losing an important international connection. Turkish Airlines (THY) has decided to temporarily suspend its direct flights between Leipzig and Istanbul as of May 2. The decision was also confirmed by the airport operator Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG.
According to a report in the local press outlet “Leipziger Volksstimme,” the end of the long-running operation on the route is considered a significant loss for regional aviation.
Route operating since 2012 has been suspended
Officials at Leipzig/Halle Airport emphasized that the Istanbul route has been operated regularly since 2012 and has been “a highly demanded connection” by passengers.
Airport spokesperson Uwe Schuhart stated that the route played an important role in both business and transit passenger traffic, adding that the decision represents a step backward for the region.
Cost pressure behind the decision
It is stated that the increase in global operational costs has been effective in Turkish Airlines’ decision to suspend the flights. In particular, rising energy prices triggered by geopolitical tensions are pushing up fuel costs in the aviation sector, forcing companies to optimize their route networks.

It is noted that Turkish Airlines does not have a plan to completely withdraw and that the Leipzig/Halle route continues to be evaluated as a strategic market in the long term.
According to company sources, the possibility of reactivating the route in the future is not entirely ruled out. This indicates that the decision is not a permanent withdrawal but rather an operational restructuring.
Critical loss for the regional connectivity network
The suspension of the Leipzig–Istanbul route also affects transportation between the two cities and transit connections via Istanbul to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
