A passenger aircraft that took off in the United States from Chicago to New York was forced to make an emergency landing after the crew reported a “possible security threat.” The United Airlines flight 2092 was diverted to Pittsburgh International Airport for security reasons.
The incident also triggered a large-scale operation in terms of aviation security.
Aircraft changed route after takeoff
According to a statement by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft had departed from Chicago O’Hare Airport and was en route to New York LaGuardia Airport.
However, due to a security concern reported by the crew during the flight, the route was changed and the aircraft was diverted to Pittsburgh for an emergency landing.
Passengers evacuated via slides
A United Airlines spokesperson stated that the passengers on board were rapidly evacuated using emergency evacuation slides.
Images shared on social media showed the aircraft in an emergency position on the runway after landing and that the evacuation process was carried out quickly. It was reported that passengers were safely taken to the terminal.
FBI and bomb disposal teams deployed
Following the incident, the FBI’s Pittsburgh office announced that agents and bomb disposal experts were dispatched to the scene.
The Allegheny County Police Department also conducted a detailed search of the aircraft, passengers and baggage together with a bomb disposal team and a K-9 unit trained in explosive detection.
Authorities stated that no suspicious findings were discovered during the searches.
Airport briefly on alert
Officials at Pittsburgh International Airport stated that security measures were raised to the highest level during the operation, but the airport was not completely shut down.
They also reported that the airport returned to normal operations after the inspections were completed.
Passengers rebooked, questions remain
It was announced that the evacuated passengers were rebooked onto different flights. However, no official details were shared regarding the nature of the threat that triggered the security alert.
Additionally, no clear statement was made by authorities on whether any detentions were made in connection with the incident.
