Turkey has achieved a significant success in the tourism sector in 2024, welcoming 49.2 million foreign visitors in the first nine months of the year and reaching a record level of tourism revenue. The country generated a total of $46.9 billion from tourism, marking a 9% increase in the number of visitors and a 7% rise in tourism revenue compared to the previous year.
Turkey’s 2024 Year-End Target: 60 Million Visitors
With this strong performance, Turkey is optimistic about reaching its year-end target of 60 million visitors. Major metropolises and popular holiday destinations are the key focal points for the growing influx of tourists.
Istanbul Draws Over 14 Million Visitors
Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, attracted over 14 million foreign tourists in 2024, registering a 7% growth. The city’s iconic tourist areas, primarily the Historic Peninsula, Taksim, Karaköy, and the Bosphorus shores, were among the most visited. Istanbul has solidified its status as the “tourism capital of Turkey,” drawing tourists from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Australia, and Asia.
Antalya Continues to Lead the Eastern Mediterranean
Antalya maintained its position as the tourism leader in Turkey’s Eastern Mediterranean region, welcoming over 13.3 million foreign visitors. Russia, Germany, and the UK are among Turkey’s key source markets. Antalya remains one of the top cities attracting tourists, while other significant destinations such as İzmir and Muğla also saw an increase in tourist traffic.
Russia, Germany, and the UK: Turkey’s Key Markets
In the first nine months of 2024, Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom stood out as important markets for tourism in Turkey. The country saw a 6% increase in visitors from Russia, with over 5.5 million tourists, while Germany contributed 5.2 million visitors, also marking a 6% growth. The UK saw a remarkable 17% growth, bringing 3.7 million British tourists to Turkey. Visitors from China also grew significantly by 84%, surpassing 312,000.
