According to an Iraqi official, Turkey has extended its flight ban to Sulaymaniyah International Airport for another six months. This decision prolongs the existing ban until December 7, 2024. Airport Director Hendreen Hiwa mentioned that they do not have details about Turkey’s reasons for the extension and no official statement has been made.
Efforts by Iraqi officials to persuade Turkey to lift the ban have failed, but new efforts may be made.
Turkish Airlines had suspended flights to Sulaymaniyah in April 2023, citing concerns that the presence of the terrorist organization PKK in Sulaymaniyah could compromise flight safety by infiltrating the airport.
