An EasyJet Airbus A320-200 passenger aircraft that departed from Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) experienced a malfunction in its right engine (engine No. 2) during landing at Lamezia Terme, Italy.
Footage recorded after the incident showed parts belonging to the turbine stages of the CFM56-5B engine used on the aircraft scattered, indicating that the malfunction was of a serious nature. However, it has not yet been officially confirmed by authorities whether the engine failure was a “contained” or an “uncontained” failure.
It was reported that following the malfunction, the flight crew implemented emergency procedures and brought the aircraft to a safe stop at Lamezia Terme Airport (SUF) while maintaining control. No statement has yet been made regarding whether there were any injuries among passengers or crew.
It was learned that the relevant authorities have launched a technical investigation into the engine malfunction.
