In an operation carried out at Istanbul Airport, nearly 1,500 tarantulas and scorpions were found, intended to be smuggled to the United States. Professor Lorenzo Prendini, Director of the American Museum of Natural History, was detained in the operation where endemic species were attempted to be placed in suitcases.
In the operation organized by the Istanbul Police Department’s Anti-Smuggling teams, approximately 1,500 venomous animals and 88 liquid tube bottles were seized.

It is stated that the DNA information of venomous animals is copied and used in pharmaceutical production. It was emphasized that the materials seized in the operation have a high monetary value and that their removal from Turkey is prohibited. According to research, a liter of drug obtained from scorpion venom is valued at 10 million dollars in the market.
