The US Department of Commerce has announced that it will subject 37 Chinese companies operating in quantum, nuclear energy technologies, and unmanned aviation sectors to export controls by including them on its ‘sanctions list.’
The statement indicated that these companies were included in the list due to their activities conflicting with US national security and foreign policy interests. It was stated that 22 companies on the list were sanctioned due to China’s advancements in quantum technologies and efforts to access technologies in the US, which could potentially be used in military applications and pose a threat to US national security.
The statement also claimed that some companies were linked to China’s nuclear programs and alleged that they transferred controlled materials to Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.
Additionally, 11 companies were sanctioned due to their high-altitude balloon program, while 4 companies were alleged to have attempted to obtain US-origin products for China’s military use in unmanned aerial vehicle systems.
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Cien criticized the US decision, emphasizing that China will take necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies.
Companies listed on the US export control list are not allowed to sell products or services without obtaining special permission from the government.
